How VA combines ratings
VA does not add ratings. 38 CFR 4.25 treats a veteran as a whole person who is 100% efficient, and each disability takes its percentage of whatever efficiency is left. The regulation's own illustration: someone 60% disabled is 40% efficient; a further 30% disability takes 30% of that 40, leaving 28% efficiency, so the person is 72% disabled. That is why two 10% ratings make 19, and why 50% and 50% make 75, not 100.
Ratings are taken from the most severe down. Each step uses Table I, the combined ratings table, and the value found is carried forward exactly. Only the final value is converted to the nearest 10, with values ending in 5 going up. The regulation's examples: 50 and 30 percent: Table I gives 65, converted to 70 percent. 40 and 20 percent: Table I gives 52, converted to 50 percent. 60, 40 and 20 percent: 60 and 40 give 76; 76 and 20 give 81, converted to 80 percent. The calculator above reproduces all three, and the combined ratings table lists every pair from 10% to 90%.
When both arms, both legs or paired skeletal muscles have compensable ratings, 38 CFR 4.26 adds a bilateral factor: the paired ratings are combined, 10% of that value is added, and the result is used as one disability. The regulation's example: 60, 20 and two bilateral 10s: 10 and 10 give 19, plus 10% of 19 (1.9) is 20.9 or 21; 60 and 21 give 68; 68 and 20 give 74, converted to 70 percent. Mark limb ratings with their side above and the calculator applies the factor, and leaves ratings out of it when that gives a higher result, as 4.26(d) requires. The bilateral factor guide walks through it.
What each rating pays
Monthly compensation comes from VA's rate tables, effective December 1, 2025. At 10% and 20% the rate is flat ($180.42 and $356.66); from 30% up, a spouse, children and dependent parents raise it. A veteran alone receives $552.47 at 30%, $1,808.45 at 70% and $3,938.58 at 100%. VA's own example, reproduced by the calculator: a 70% rating with a spouse who receives Aid and Attendance and 3 dependent children under 18 receives $2,367.45 a month.

Rating Ledger is not part of VA and does not file or decide claims. Amounts are VA's published monthly rates effective December 1, 2025 for a veteran, before any deduction or special monthly compensation; ratings follow 38 CFR 4.25 and 38 CFR 4.26.
