Methodology and sources
Every number on Rating Ledger is read from a published federal source, stored with that source and the date it was checked, and computed by one engine (/js/vamath.js) used both to build the pages and in the calculator.

Method
Combining. Each Table I cell equals the first value plus the second rating's share of the remaining efficiency, rounded to the nearest whole number with .5 going up: value = a + b × (100 − a) ÷ 100. This reproduces every Table I cell checked against the regulation (rows 19, 50, 60, 65, 70 and 94, all nine columns). Ratings are combined from the most severe down; the exact value is carried between steps and converted to the nearest 10 once, with values ending in 5 going up.
Bilateral factor. Ratings marked on the left and right of the same pair of limbs are combined, 10% of that value is added and the result is rounded to a whole number, as in the regulation's example (19 + 1.9 = 20.9, used as 21). With both arms and both legs rated, all four sides form one group. The engine also tries leaving ratings out of the group and keeps that result only if it gives a higher rating, per 4.26(d).
Pay. The basic rate is the VA table row for the spouse, dependent parents and whether there is a child under 18. Each further child under 18, each child 18 to 23 in school and a spouse on Aid and Attendance adds the published added amount. Following 38 U.S.C. 1115(1)(F), a child over 18 in school is paid the school amount on account of that child and does not also select a "with child" row. At 10% and 20% the flat rate applies.
Tests. npm test reproduces the 38 CFR 4.25 examples (50 and 30 to 70; 40 and 20 to 50; 60, 40 and 20 to 80), the 4.26 bilateral example (60, 20 and two bilateral 10s to 70), VA's "two 10% ratings make 19%" and its 50, 30 and 10 example, every Table I cell above, both of VA's pay examples ($617.47 and $2,367.45), the statutory rounding of the child amounts, and checks that every record carries an https source and a checked date.
Condition criteria
The criteria on each condition page are close summaries of the regulation text, keeping its numbers, degrees and thresholds. eCFR showed Title 38 up to date as of 10/16/2026 when read. The regulation's wording governs; each page links to it.
Left out, and gaps
- 6100 Hearing loss: Rated from audiometric Tables VI, VIA and VII; the tables could not be read in full through the fetch tool, so no page is built.
- 7005 Coronary artery disease: The fetched text of 38 CFR 4.104 did not show which formula 7005 uses; left out rather than guessed.
- 8045 Traumatic brain injury: Rated through a multi-facet table that could not be read in full.
- 7522 Erectile dysfunction: Rated 0% with special monthly compensation review; SMC rates are not in this site's data yet.
- 5215 wrist, 5259 meniscus removal, 5280 hallux valgus, 5251 hip extension: A single 10% level each: too little page-specific content for a stand-alone page.
- Special monthly compensation (SMC) rates and the rates for surviving spouses and parents (DIC) are not included.
- Pairs that include 100% are not built as pages: any rating combined with 100% stays 100%.
- The calculator's TDIU note uses the percentages as entered; it does not group several disabilities into one as 4.16(a) allows (same body system, single accident and so on).
- Rates change every December 1 with the cost-of-living adjustment. The site will be updated from the new VA table; until then the dates above say which table is shown.
